BIOGRAPHY

Ian Joseph Somerhalder (born December 8, 1978) is an American actor, male fashion model and producer, probably most notable for playing Boone Carlyle in the TV drama Lost.Somerhalder was born in Covington, Louisiana. He has a brother, Bob, and a sister. His father, Robert Somerhalder, was a building contractor of French and English descent, and his mother, Edna, who is of Irish and Choctaw descent, grew up on a pig farm in Mississippi. The surname "Somerhalder" originates from his adoptive great grandfather. His biological great grandfather, a wealthy English landowner, got one of his mistresses pregnant and paid an immigrant worker of his to marry this woman and give the baby a name, which was Somerhalder. The biological great-grandfather's name was Hull.Somerhalder began his career as a fashion model, with his mother's encouragement at the age of 10. He modeled in New York, Paris, Milan, and London. His modeling credits include Calvin Klein, American Eagle Outfitters, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Versace, and Guess?. He was the face of Guess? for two fall seasons. His first major acting role was in The Rules of Attraction, Roger Avary's adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name.

A strikingly handsome player who proved his versatility with accomplished forays into acting and modeling, Ian Somerhalder possesses the piercing eyes and chiseled features that spell success in the more adult modeling world and the emotional intensity and shy rebellious charm that makes perfect teen heartthrob material on screen. The son of a massage therapist and a building contractor, Ian Somerhalder was born and raised in the small southern town of Covington, LA. Boating, swimming, fishing and training horses filled much of his recreational time growing up, as did the school drama club and performing with the local theater group. A Louisiana native who spent many summers in Manhattan working after he made his modeling debut at age ten, Ian Somerhalder took some time off to enjoy a regular school career, but returned to the business in his mid-teens with extensive print and runway work that took him to Europe as well as NYC. At age 17, Ian Somerhalder began his acting training, going on to work with William Esper by age nineteen. Around that time he was spotted working as an extra in a crowd scene in the James Toback feature "Black and White" (2000). Intrigued by his unique look, a manager signed him. Ian Somerhalder subsequently made his TV debut on an episode of the acclaimed CBS sci-fi drama "Now and Again" in 1999. The following year Ian Somerhalder starred on the teen drama "Young Americans" on The WB, playing the brooding Rawley Academy student Hamilton, son of the prep school's dean. Unexpected feelings related to his close friendship with the mysterious Jake (Katherine Moennig) lead the young man to question his sexuality, and while the girl-posing-as-boy storyline somewhat trivialized the very serious topic of sexual orientation, Hamilton's honest response to his feelings and his confusion rang true, proving Ian Somerhalder an actor with promise and potential, not just primetime eye candy. In 2002, Ian Somerhalder was cast as Paul Denton in the thriller "Rules of Attraction", a feature based on the novel written by Bret Easton Ellis. Set in an affluent New England liberal arts college, an emerging sexual triangle emerges between drug dealer Sean Bateman (James Van Der Beek), Lauren, (Shannyn Sossamon) the girl he thinks he's in love with, and Paul Owen (Ian Somerhalder), who's in love with Sean. Happy to be anchored in New York, Ian Somerhalder spends much of his time studying acting, writing and practicing yoga. Ian Somerhalder's recreational interests include water and snow skiing and horseback riding. Ian Somerhalder was the face of Guess? for two consecutive Fall seasons and modeled for Calvin Klein, Versace, Dolce & Gabanna, and Gucci as well. However, he doesn't like to talk about his modeling career because of the impressions people might get of him as being just another pretty face.

CAREER

In the summer of 2000, Somerhalder starred in the short-lived WB series Young Americans, a spin-off of Dawson's Creek. He played Hamilton Fleming, the son of the dean of a prestigious boarding school. In 2002, Somerhalder played bisexual character Paul Denton in Roger Avary's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel, The Rules of Attraction, alongside James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, and Jessica Biel.
In 2004, Somerhalder scored his breakthrough role when he played Boone Carlyle in the hit TV show Lost. Despite his character's death in the twentieth episode of the first season, Somerhalder returned to the role of Boone for seven more episodes, between 2005 and 2010, including the series finale. In an ironic twist, Somerhalder was the first actor to be cast in a role for the series, but he was also the first character to die. He has stated that he was going to buy a house in Hawaii, where filming took place, until he learned his character was being killed off.
In May 2006, Somerhalder was named one of DNA Models' Top 10 Male Models. Somerhalder guest starred as Nick in HBO's Tell Me You Love Me, appearing fully nude in a sex scene with actress Michelle Borth. The show was cancelled after just one season.
In September 2009, Somerhalder appeared in the movie The Tournament where he played the role of an assassin participating in a lethal competition with other assassins. On 10 October 2009, it was announced that he will star in the Gothic movie Cradlewood, which is to be directed by Harry Weinmann. The movie is set to be released in 2013.
Somerhalder appears in the limited-edition coffee table book About Face by celebrity photographer John Russo and Pixie Press Worldwide publishers.
